Learn ASL with Scripts

ASL, or American Sign Language, is a language used by as many as 500,000 people in the United States and Anglophone Canada. And it’s one of the most taught languages after Spanish, French, and English. If you’re interested in learning ASL, learning to sign the alphabet is the perfect way to introduce yourself to the language and gain the ability to start communicating right away.

Scripts by Drops is thrilled to introduce ASL as the latest addition to the alphabets and writing systems you can learn with the app in celebration of the UN Sponsored International Day of Sign Languages.

Over 5% of the world's population has disabling hearing loss (that’s about 432 million adults and 34 million children). It is estimated that by 2050 one in every ten people will have disabling hearing loss.

About American Sign Language

American Sign Language is one of more than 300 documented sign languages (source) used by 72 million deaf people worldwide. ASL gained status as a language in the 1800s after the American School for the Deaf brought together Old French Sign Language with other systems.

ASL is native to the United States, but has not received recognition as the official language of any country. It involves not only the use of the hands but also facial expressions and torso movement. Many names and borrowed words are signed through fingerspelling, making knowledge of the ASL alphabet essential for communication for those who’d like to converse in the language. And with the addition of the ASL alphabet to Scripts, it’s our hope to support this incredible language.
